Younger Members

Role of the Committee

Maeve_Delargy.jpgThe Younger Members Committee was established to identify, explore and promote issues affecting members of our profession across the country who are in their first seven years of legal practice (including those working in private practice, in-house, in public sector and charitable organisations). The objectives of the Committee are:

  1. To work with partners to implement recommendations from the ‘Future Way we Work’ Survey 2021.

  2. To work with partners on issues relating to access to the legal profession.

  3. To work with colleagues to enhance awareness of Law Society membership benefits and Law Society structures.

  4. To continue to foster links with peer organisations in Ireland and other jurisdictions.

Current issues on the Committee's agenda include:

  1. The Younger Members Committee partners with Law Society Professional Training on an annual basis to present a Conference on topics of relevance to younger members of the profession. The 2024 conference will take place on Thursday 3 October. Details to be announced.

  2. The Committee's online Career Information Sessions can be viewed on the Law Society's YouTube Channel.

  3. The Committee continues to foster links with peer organisations in other jurisdictions. This includes membership of the European Young Bar Association (EYBA) and developing links with the Northern Ireland Young Solicitors Association, English & Welsh Junior Lawyer Division, Scottish Young Lawyers Association and the Young Lawyer Section of the Canadian Bar Association. A key focus of these engagements is to share experiences and work together on topics of common interest.

  4. The Committee liaises with other Law Society Committees and sections of the Law Society on issues relevant to younger members. This includes the Law School Ambassador programme and supporting the work of the Wellbeing team, the Career Support team, the GEDI Task Force and the EAST Task Force. The Committee has also assisted with the work of the Legal Services Regulation Authority.
