The July 2023 Gazette includes an in-depth interview with Solicitor Joan Crawford, who now leads the Legal Aid Board.

The Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) has published decisions and recommendations from 19 to 29 June 2023. Cases covered include a successful claim of pay discrimination on grounds of age, an unsuccessful complaint pursuant to the Payment of Wages Act, and a claim of discrimination on grounds of disability where an employment application did not advance based on the candidate's absence from work.

Revenue has circulated an update on changes to reporting requirements for payments to employees and/or directors. The introduction of Section 897C of the TCA 1997 as part of the Finance Act 2022 will require employers to report to Revenue details of certain payments from 1 January 2024.

Practitioners can now access a recording of the annual IMRO/Law Society of Ireland Copyright lecture on 3 May 2023. This lecture examined the multi-faceted Article 15 of Directive (EU) 2019/790 on copyright and related rights in the Digital Single Market, which has given rise to considerable lobbying and heated debate at both EU and national levels.

In conjunction with the Central Bank of Ireland, the Law Society held a consultation event on the Consolidated Guidelines in respect of the Central Bank Administrative Sanctions Procedure (ASP) on 5 July. A recording of this event, and other relevant information, is available below.

Resources

The Law Society Library’s latest Subject Guide on environmental and planning law is now available. Members and students can browse books, eBooks, journal articles, case law, legislation and other relevant information from both the Law Society and other organisations.

The updated Guide for In-House Solicitors Employed in the Corporate and Public Sectors is available in PDF and web formats. The Guide refers to the practical issues that may confront in-house solicitors in fulfilling their duties, as well as support services available to the in-house solicitor.

Training

On 12 October, the In-house and Public Sector Committee and Law Society Finuas Skillnet will host the annual in-house Conference. It will be held at the Law Society from 9.45 am to 1.15pm on the themes of ESG and AI. It will be an excellent opportunity for in-house solicitors in the private and public sectors to meet their colleagues in-person. Details, including the Brochure and Booking Form, are available below.

Booking is now open for the Autumn 2023 courses offered by the Law Society Diploma Centre. Courses relevant for in-house practitioners include the Diploma in Employment Law, Certificate in Aviation Leasing and Finance, Diploma in Construction Law and more.
