News

A recent panel discussion held by the Law Society’s In-house and Public Sector Committee was wide-ranging in scope and relevance. Mary Hallissey reports for the June Gazette ‘From general counsel to chief executive’.

Arbitration Ireland and ICC Ireland invites practitioners to a special discussion on ICC arbitration with Claudia Salomon, President of the ICC International Court of Arbitration, at the Dublin Dispute Resolution Centre, Distillery Building on Wednesday, 19 June 2024. This is a unique opportunity to openly exchange views with the leadership of the arbitration institution and gain valuable insights into its procedures and decision-making processes, so early booking is encouraged.

The Law Society recently held an event to mark Pro bono Week Ireland, celebrating the achievements of pro bono work, and giving practitioners the opportunity to hear from NGOs seeking support. Mary Halissey reports for the online Gazette.

The Chief State Solicitor’s Office (CSSO) is holding an open competition for the post of State Solicitor (Fixed Term). Theyaim to attract people with “a strong public-service ethos” who show commitment, energy, sound judgment and an ability to work under pressure to tight deadlines when needed. The closing date for applications is 3pm on Thursday 27 June.

The Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) has published decisions and recommendations from 13 to 21 May 2024. Issues covered include fair procedures in a disciplinary process and deduction of wages, time limits under the Workplace Relations Act, 2015 where the behaviour complained of was ongoing, and more.

Resources

The Law Society has added the topic Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) to our Library’s new Subject Guide series. Solicitors seeking resources in this growing and quickly evolving area will find multiple sources of information to assist you in understanding the basics of and latest legislation and guidance on ESG, including Law Society and government guidance.

Training

The Law Society Diploma Centre's Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on Environmental, Social & Governance commenced on 11 June, but you can join in and catch up with course content now. This free online course offers a detailed examination of ESG reporting obligations, together with an overview of common sustainability principles and frameworks, and a focused view of the impact on various sectors and industries.

On 2 October 2024 the In-house and Public Sector Committee and Law Society Professional Training will host the annual Conference for in-house solicitors in the private and public sectors. It will be held at the Law Society from 9.30 am, and will be an excellent opportunity to meet colleagues in-person. Details, including the Brochure and Booking Form, will be available on the Society’s website shortly. In the meantime, you might like to save the date.
