The latest statistics on the top 20 firms and in-house teams reveal growth in demand for legal services and talent. A&L Goodbody leads PC numbers and female admissions are up to 60%, while in-house solicitors comprise 25% of the profession. Mark Garrett provides some insights in the Gazette.

A survey of in-house lawyers carried out by Mason Hayes & Curran has found that two-thirds (66%) remain undecided on how they would vote in a referendum on a Unified Patent Court (UPC). The law firms says that its survey of 240 lawyers underscores the “pervasive uncertainty” surrounding the referendum.

The Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) has published decisions and recommendations from 6 to 18 April 2024. Cases covered include consideration of the Equal Status Acts’ application to the sale of insurance policies, a contested application to change the name of a respondent, and more.

Gazette.ie reports on two events hosted by the In-House Pro Bono Network (PBN) and A&L Goodbody to mark In-House Pro Bono Day. Established in Ireland last November, the PBN is a community of lawyers employed in-house by large organisations who collectively believe that the provision of pro-bono work is a professional responsibility for all lawyers.

Registration is now open for the 2024 Massive Open Online Course (MOOC). Starting on Tuesday 11 June, this free online course will provide participants with a comprehensive guide to the evolving legal landscape of ESG, a detailed examination of ESG reporting obligations, together with an overview of common sustainability principles and frameworks, and a focused view of the impact on various sectors and industries.

Training

On 2 October 2024 the In-house and Public Sector Committee and Law Society Professional Training will host the annual Conference for in-house solicitors in the private and public sectors. It will be held at the Law Society from 9.45 am, and will be an excellent opportunity to meet colleagues in-person. Details, including the Brochure and Booking Form, will be available on the Society’s website in the coming months. In the meantime, you might like to save the date.

The Law Society Diploma Centre has announced its autumn 2024 portfolio of courses. With a diverse range of innovative programmes on offer, topics will appeal to members working in a range of practice areas including finance law, insolvency law, construction law, technology and IP law, aviation leasing and finance and more.

An upcoming interactive seminar on 28 May ’Risk and Resilience in the Legal Profession’ promotes a framework for lawyers to evaluate risk and advise clients by employing legal knowledge, skills, and judgment within the context of the client’s objectives. This seminar is suitable for all practising solicitors but particularly tailored for those working in-house in the private sector.
