News

The Law Society of Ireland invites members of the Irish legal community to attend the Ireland for Law General Counsel Summit in Blackhall Place on the morning of Tuesday 28 February 2023. The summit is targeted at general counsel and will focus on how to continue to increase the role of Irish lawyers in providing legal services to the global business community and promoting Ireland's advantages as a jurisdiction for legal transactions, including dispute resolution. The latest Gazette features a report on the recent Law Society In-House and Public Sector conference. This event focused on the theme of environmental, social and governance (ESG) and its impact on businesses across the public and private sectors.

The Competition (Amendment) Act was signed into law in June 2022 and is expected to be commenced in the coming months. Laura McGovern and Jessica Egan examine the issues raised for the Jan-Feb 2023 Gazette.

The European Company Lawyers Association has announced its schedule of Corporate Counsel Academy courses for 2023. Topics covered include European compliance expertise, drafting international contracts, and much more.

Resources

The print edition of the 2023 Law Directory is currently being finalised. Along with other useful practice resources, the Law Directory includes contact details and key information for Law Society members in Ireland and abroad. While updates throughout the year are reflected in the digital edition, members should review and confirm their preferences for the print edition by Friday 24 February.

Following a comprehensive review of Continuing Professional Development (CPD), the Council of the Law Society of Ireland approved a new CPD regime for 2023 at its November 2022 meeting. The adjustments must also be approved by the Department of Justice. Pending that, the Education Committee has published the anticipated details of the 2023 scheme.

Training

On 10 May the In-house and Public Sector Committee and Law Society Finuas Skillnet will host the annual in-house Panel Discussion. It will be held at the Law Society from 2 pm to 4.30 pm, and will be an excellent opportunity for in-house solicitors in the private and public sectors to meet their colleagues in-person. The theme will focus on the social aspects of Environmental Social and Governance (ESG). Details, including the Brochure and Booking Form, will be available on the Society’s website in the coming weeks.
