News

  • Solicitors and their clients now need to take a very close look at their data-protection notices – and to update them – following recent Data Protection Commission decisions, explains Brendan Quinn in the latest Gazette. Read the article
  • The Academy of European Law (ERA) has set up a scholarship programme supporting practitioners to access legal training on European law. The programme, supported by the Friends of ERA and other partners, is designed to ensure that all legal practitioners from EU member states and candidate countries have the opportunity to participate in professional training on European law.   • Regulations providing for mandatory reporting on gender-pay gaps will be published “in the coming weeks”, according to Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth Roderic O’Gorman TD. The regulations – under the Gender Pay Gap Information Act 2021 – will require organisations with more than 250 employees to report on pay differences between male and female workers in 2022.   • The Law Society has launched a new sanctions resource hub to help solicitors ensure compliance with restrictive measures on Russia and Belarus following the invasion of Ukraine. The hub has been developed to help solicitors respond to the sanctions which are now rapidly increasing in number and scope, with a wide-reaching effect on individuals, countries and trade.   • A range of new books received by the Law Society Library cover topics relevant to in-house practice. These include Employment law by Dorothy Donovan, The a-z of contract clauses by Deborah Fosbrook, New accountability in financial services by Joe McGrath and Residential construction law by Philip Britton.   • The In-house and Public Sector Committee and Law Society Skillnet are pleased to host the annual panel discussion in an online format. The theme this year is Environmental Social and Governance (ESG) and its impact for in-house solicitors and the organisations/businesses they serve across the public and private sectors.   • Corporate law and governance has seen numerous changes since the introduction of the Companies Act 2014 and the recent passing of the Companies (Corporate Enforcement Authority) Act 2021.
